The invention of cement revolutionized construction and civil engineering. It is not - as one might think - from the brain of a diploma engineer, but the experience of a gardener. As it was the fashion, there was rock throwing of cement on a fence. He observed that this material was both waterproof and rot proof and used it in place of wooden flower boxes. Noticing that this material had a high resistance, it was used for bins, first small then large, then tanks, soon beams, bridges ... The book traces the history of this slow development which was carried out over a dozen years, as well as trial and error and achievements of other researchers, in France, the United States, Great Britain and Germany.

Retooling Design discusses a design discourse in which the superiority of materials is key. These materials will be developed in products with an increasingly layered functionality. The study outlines a starting position in which smart materials (shape memory polymers) can fulfil an expanding range of tasks in the future. A horizon in which reaction mechanisms can develop, which can also adapt to the relentless pace of the public and its environment, resulting in flexible patterns of use and management. An ars combinatoria, which encourages us to reflect and admire.

"Unlike the more specialist books which deal with diagnosis techniques or non-destructive testing, with repair and strengthening of concrete structures or with specific degradation mechanisms such as sulfate attack or alkali-silica reaction, this book describes and explains the different types of damage to concrete structures comprehensively. It is written as a textbook for undergraduate and masters students, and is also helpful to practitioners such as design engineers, architects or consultants"--

The reemergence in the early eighteenth century of the technology and use of concrete provide the starting point for this first volume of the Treatise on Concrete. In this book are described and analyzed, for the first time, the various contributions that led to the rediscovery of concrete made by the specialists of the period, from chemists to volcanologists; from engineers to architects and construction workers; from inventors to archaeologists and even men of letters.

Architectural space and religious ritual Le Corbusier not only designed and built churches; he was also intensely interested in religion and faith. His work deeply influenced church architecture in the twentieth century. This book examines Le Corbusier's relationship with religion in two introductory chapters, presents his four designs for La Sainte-Baume, the Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut de Ronchamp, the Cloister of La Tourette, and the Church of St. Pierre, and, in the final chapter, examines his influence on church architecture in Europe in the twentieth century. Examples include the Jubilee Church near Rome by Richard Meier, the Chapel of Saint Ignatius in Seattle by Steven Holl, the Santa Maria Church in Porto by Alvaro Siza, Tadao Ando's Meditation Space in Paris, as well as the Kapelle der Versohnung (Church of Reconciliation) in Berlin by Reitermann & Sassenroth.Flora Samuel holds a PhD in architecture and teaches design and architecture history at the University of Bath, UK, and is the author of numerous publications. Inge Linder-Galliard also holds a PhD in architecture and has researched and written about Le Corbusier's work in numerous essays.
